Four out of five stars. This is a compulsively readable story of family life that incorporates mystical elements and is told from various perspectives. Ward is such a skilled writer that I always have a hard time putting her books down and this book was no exception. Racism and hardship pervade each generation depicted in the book. Drug abuse and addiction also have a role in the story and Ward does a remarkable job making us both horrified and sympathetic to it. Her readable, intimate style, discerning perspective, and impeccable character development rivals that of the best authors writing today. This is an author to follow.
