Sip & Spell: A Spelling Bee for Adults 2016

We had a blast, Corvallis! Thanks to everyone who participated in Sip & Spell 2016. Check out our Storify of the event: https://storify.com/corvallislib/sip-spell-2016.

Congratulations to our Sip & Spell 2016 champion, Andrea Seavers! (She didn’t use a single cheat either!) Runners up were Dave Mellinger and Jim Rankin (Jim also didn’t use any cheats!). A huge round of applause to these tremendous spellers.

Corvallis-Benton County Public Library presents the 2nd annual Sip & Spell: a Spelling Bee for Adults, hosted by Mike McInally, Editor of the Corvallis Gazette-Times, on Saturday, January 30, 2016 at 7:00 PM at the Whiteside Theatre (361 SW Madison Ave) in Corvallis.

Do you spell words like synecdoche in your sleep? Maybe you don’t care what pococurante is, but do you definitely know how to spell it? Then don’t miss Sip & Spell, a spelling bee for adults age 18 and over and a fundraising event for the Friends of the Corvallis-Benton County Public Library. We’ll be pulling all of the big words out of the 11th edition of Merriam-Webster’s Collegiate Dictionary and prizes will be awarded to the 1st place winner. Click here for the offical rules.

Participants in the Bee may register on the day of the Bee between 5:30pm and 6:45pm at the Whiteside Theatre. There is a $5.00 registration fee that must be paid by cash, check or credit card during the registration period. Sip & Spell is free to watch, so all are welcome to sit on the sidelines to cheer and heckle. Food and drink from American Dream Pizza and McWeenie’s will be available for purchase.

“Cheats” may also be purchased at the time of registration: $3.00 to ask a friend, $5.00 for 30 seconds with a dictionary, $5.00 to rewind and respell a word you’ve begun to misspell, and $10.00 to get you a mulligan card which buys you back into the Bee if you misspell a word. Or, $20.00 gets you the full cheat package!

This event is sponsored by the Friends of the Corvallis-Benton County Public Library, OSU Libraries, the Corvallis Gazette-Times, and Whiteside Theatre. All proceeds from this event benefit the Friends of the Library.
