September 2025: Penny Draws a Best Friend by Sara Shepard
Fifth grader Penny, who doodles to cope with anxiety, worries that her best friend is drifting away.
Why does the cubby room always smell like farts? Who etched the words “I Am Bug Man” inside my desk? Why is Mom suddenly acting like she has a secret? Nobody said starting fifth grade would be easy, and Penny Lowry’s anxiety means a million questions are always spinning through her thoughts. Luckily she’s got a lot to look forward to, like her favorite after-school activity, Art Club, and seeing her best friend Violet again after spending the whole summer apart. The thing is, Violet has been acting weird ever since she got back. She never wants to hang out anymore, says Art Club is for babies, and spends all her time with Riley, the meanest girl in school. Did Penny do something wrong? And if she did, can she undo it?
A limited number of kits will be available at each branch beginning Saturday, September 6th.
November 2025: The Lost Library by Rebecca Stead
When a mysterious little free library (guarded by Mortimer, a large. 6-toed orange cat) appears overnight in the small town of Martinville, eleven-year-old Evan plucks two weathered books from its shelves. He and his best friend Rafe quickly discover a link between one of the old books and the fatal fire that destroyed the town library– a long-ago event that none of the grown-ups want to talk about. The boys start asking questions whose answers will transform their own futures, as well as that of Martinville. Told in turn by three narrators: Evan, Mortimer, and Mortimer’s human friend “AL” (aka Assistant Librarian), The Lost Library is a timeless story from award-winning authors Rebecca Stead and Wendy Mass. It’s about owning your truth, choosing the life you want, and the power of a good book (and, of course, the librarian who gave it to you). Oh, and about benevolent ghosts.
